The clear coat on my car had started to chip off, so I went to a service center to get it repainted. The payment was mostly labor costs, since the paint itself was relatively inexpensive.

I was very happy with the service, and have had no problems with the paint since the service. Most of the payment was labor, but this service is very difficult for DIY, since it would require painting equipment that most people do not have easy access to.

There's a wide variety of costs for paint jobs. Think about how nice you want it to look, how long you want it to last, and whether nonessential parts should be painted (for example, the inside of door interfaces.) Know that changing the color of a car when repainting is usually more expensive because a number of normally unnecessary parts need to be repainted. When you go to certain specialty shops, you may find that the cost is much higher than what I mentioned. They tend to be more thorough, so in certain circumstances, e.g. classic cars, it may be worth spending extra. For a completely utilitarian vehicle like a work truck or church van, you may be able to get away with paying less than I did.
