One day while driving into work we destroyed the differential on our 1995 Ford Escort while trying to park, of all things.
One call to the local Ford dealership was all it took to get a quote and get it repaired! The parts counter was more than happy to explain all of the charges, and threw in the interior detailing and wash and polish for free! Because we had patronized their service center several times for basic maintenance and minor repairs they rewarded us with free services.
The total price of $250 was to repair the differential and lube of the rest of the drive train, as well as a fluids check.
They did advise that other systems maintenance should be done soon, but did not charge for the diagnoses.
Tips
If you talk to the parts people and ask them basic questions courteously and knowledgeably they will cut you a deal. It pays off to know a bit about cars! You can read any of the car maintenance manuals and arm yourself with some basic knowledge to get a leg up.
