Description of service
My muffler came loose and was close to dragging along the ground (it hung just above ground level). I brought it in for repair. They took a look and said that it had rusted out and definitely needed to be replaced. They said I should leave it with them so that they could determined exactly how much of the piping attached to the muffler would also need to be replaced. I told them that since it was not a great car and since I would be selling it soon that I would rather err on the cheap side rather than spend a lot of money to fix the problem. They told me the estimated cost would be about $120 with a maximum of $150.
They ended up replacing about two feet of piping plus the muffler itself, and the cost was $130, which was well within the estimate that they had given me. It took them a day to complete the service.
Review of Service
I was satisfied with service I received. I left the car in the shop for a day, which is a reasonable amount of time for this kind of problem, they replaced the muffler with a good part as they promised, and the estimate they gave me was accurate.
Tips
I would recommend a professional place for a problem like I had. They were honest, straightforward, and responsible, and did what they promised. I have been to auto mechanics who have been dishonest, charged too much, and done a poor job. A place like this can't do everything a mechanic can do, but when a job is within their realm of expertise, I would advise going to them.
However, since my problem was very common, easy to describe, and did not involve any intricate details or inspection, it was worth calling a few places to compare prices beforehand. For some auto jobs, they will tell you that they can't even give you an estimate without seeing the car, but if it's just a muffler replacement then they should be able to give you a quote over the phone.
