Description of service
Our dishwasher was not working properly. Although it went through the cycles, the dishes were not clean and it was making some strange sounds. Being new to the area, we didn't have experience with repair facilities, so after making a few calls, we settled on a local, family-owned appliance store, who sent out a repair guy within hours. It ended up being a minor repair. He had to replace the hose, because it was cracked and was also all gunked up. He also had to make a few adjustments to the timer, since that was causing part of the problem. He also cleaned out the drain trap at the bottom, which had gotten clogged. The $95 fee was $65 for the service call and $30 for the hose that he replaced. He did not accept a tip, but he had a glass of iced tea.
Review of Service
I was very pleased with the service. He seemed to know what he was doing and was able to make the repair and test the dishwasher quickly and efficiently. He even gave me some operating and cleaning tips and told me that I had a good dishwasher with a good track record. I was surprised that the bill came to less than $100. He was there less than an hour and the dishwasher has been operating flawlessly ever since. In fact, it's much quieter and the dinnerware is getting cleaner, thanks to the tips he provided.
Tips
1. Ask friends or neighbors for recommendations first. In my case, no one had any suggestions, so I resorted to an online search and checking Yellow pages ads.
2. Go with a local company instead of a large, franchise repair chain, if possible. They have more invested in your community and really need the business in this down economy. They are likely to do a much better job, since they want your repeat business and referrals.
3. Don't be afraid to haggle about price. In my case, I thought the $95 was a fair price considering the other quotes I had were $115 and up.
4. Ask for some business cards and use them to refer others.
