Description of service
Replaced front brake calipers and brake pads. Refinished both front brake rotors. The total amount for the service was $540, including parts, labor, supplies and taxes. Parts (brake calipers and pads) were about $220 and labor (including work on rotors) was $240.
Review of Service
I borough the car in thinking that the front wheel bearing had to be replaced. The car was making a rather weird noise while driving at low speed (20-40 mph). Additionally, when the car was lifted from the ground, the front driver side wheel was hard to turn manually. The same wheel was also overheating when I was driving.
The mechanics checked the car and said there was nothing wrong with the wheel bearings, but one of the brake calipers was stuck, and they both had to be replaced. Of course the brake pads had to be replaced too (even though they were nearly new). They recommended replacing the rotors as well, but I declined.
The service was professional and relatively fast. After the service, the car was road tested. The brakes have performed well afterwords, except for a couple of days when they were making a rather annoying squeaking noise.
Tips
If you have problems with your brakes it is a good idea to take your car to a knowledgeable and experienced auto mechanic. It may also be wise to question why the want to service both brakes, if only one of them is defective.
