Description of service
The mechanism that controls the movement of the sunroof was worn out and needed to be replaced. It required the removal of the glass sunroof as well as a pull down of the car ceiling panel to access the mechanism, which was removed, analyzed to see if it could be repaired, and then ultimately replaced with a new part. It took about three hours for the work to be completed. The cost of $550 included the price of the part ($175), plus three hours of time for one employee.
Review of Service
Initially, I didn't realize the difficulty involved to access the controlling mechanism, but once he got to it, he did a good job with the work. The job was completed within the time promised, and the repair technician also checked the wiring between the part and the driver's control to make sure that the problem was not in the connection. The shop kept me informed about the work and the approach they were taking, and it was helpful for me when making the repair decision to know that they were thorough in their evaluation. It was also somewhat lucky for me that the facility had the replacement mechanism on the premises. The car ceiling was put back in its original position when they finished, and it looked the same as before the work. The sunroof worked great after they were finished and it is again one of the most enjoyable features of the car.
Tips
Besides using the sunroof less, there isn't much that can be done to avoid wearing out the control mechanism. If the sunroof won't open or tilt, it is likely a mechanism problem, so you may want to ask your repair facility if they have a replacement part available or if they will need to order it; that will save you some time and an additional trip to the repair shop.
