Description of service
My engine was leaking fluid so I took the car to be checked and I was told that there one of my axle seals was broken and I was losing transmission fluid. I was advised to have it repaired right away or risk damaging the whole transmission system, so I agreed to have the work done, which involved pulling out the axle, replacing the seal and any lost fluid, and then putting the axle back. The total cost of $174 included $14 for the parts, and $160 for the labor and time to do the work.
Review of Service
I trusted the mechanic who first looked at the car and told me about the problem, and even though it seemed pretty straightforward and simple to repair, it made me feel more comfortable when I could go under the car and see for myself what he was talking about. The work was done within about 1.5 hours, which was the estimated time, and the charge for the repair was reasonable based on the time involved. I liked that I was told about the alternatives, such as waiting a few days/weeks, ignoring it, or having it done right away, and that they clearly told me the consequences so that I could make an informed decision.
Tips
It is always helpful to have a mechanic or garage that you trust so that when you learn of a problem you can make the right decision. It always makes sense to at least call one or two other facilities to check prices so that you feel comfortable that your quote is reasonable by comparison. Also, always look at the parking space after you back out to check for liquid so that you can catch problems early.
