Description of service
I took my 96 Honda Civic in to my mechanic because a "service engine now" light came on and the car had started stuttering a little bit - a friend had to replace his transmission a few months before and it felt like the transmission was starting to go so i was a little worried it was going to be a huge bill. It turned out my mechanic figured out it was only the oxygen sensor that was failing and would be fairly easy to replace (and much cheaper than a new transmission).
Review of Service
Awesome. Took an hour or so from the time i brought my car to the mechanic and that was only because he had to wait for the part to come in from a supplier. With the new sensor my car has been solid now for 6 months and counting. The sensor itself was the majority of the price and my mechanic just charged me for a 1/4 hour of labor.
Tips
It felt like my transmission was slipping but somehow this sensor controls gas flow to the engine so my honest mechanic saved me serious money. If you don't trust your mechanic and you think it might be your transmission you should get a second opinion since it could be something simple like an oxygen sensor.
