Description of service
I paid for a tune-up, fuel flush, and a valve- cover gasket re-seal repair. For the tune-up it was plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor button. They charged me 35 dollars to replace the spark plugs, and 35 dollars to replace the wires. I could have done that for free. The valve gasket cover set was 72 dollars plus the underside of it which was another 70 (?) the fuel system clean came to around 50 dollars.
Review of Service
I am generally leery of franchise auto repair and maintenance shops. And the above example is a good reason. 35 dollars to change spark plugs! Really! And 35 more to replace the wires! I'll do it myself next time! You really have to watch these big south auto repair franchises because they'll just add stuff in between the lines. I was not please with this price. It should have been a lot less. These franchise set up near colleges so they can prey on the poor clueless students like me. The fuel flush, they have their own "kit" and then they charge for labor on top of that. And the valve gasket cover repair did not last and was overpriced. This repair should have been about half that price! Is 70 dollars the right amount for a tune-up? Maybe.
Tips
Steer clear of franchise auto repair and huge corporate owned. GOt to privately owned repair shops and get to know the mechanics. Find an honest hardworking on cartalk public radio website in their mechanic files. Word of mouth advertising is best.
